May 12 – A Cup of Jesus…
Judges 14:1-15:20 / John 7:37-39 / Proverbs 11:29-12:7
Have you had your drink of Jesus today? That sounds odd… doesn’t it? Yet Jesus encourages us, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” He promises that the “drinker” will have streams of living water flowing from within them.
We live in a world today where people look to outside stimulates to get them energized for their day. A 16 year old girl who rides my bus gets on every morning with a large McDonalds coffee. I asked her what kind of coffee it was and she told me it was just plain old regular coffee. She then explained that McDonalds coffee was strong so she had to doctor it up a bit. How much doctoring? She puts 10 cream and 15 packets of sugar in her coffee… not only does she get a caffeine high but a sugar high!
For many people, that is mild in comparison to the energy drinks, high caffeine supplements and coffee they take to get them ready for their day. Is that wrong? Not necessarily… everyone has times in life when their batteries are drained and they need to be recharged with proper rest, exercise and nutrition. I am not a proponent for a drug dependent lifestyle BUT an advocate for a God dependent lifestyle!
When was the last time you saw someone carrying their Bible around like they would their morning coffee cup? When we drink in the things of Christ, He deposits His abundant Spirit of presence and power in us. Our communion with Christ gives and sustains life. Our strength, energy and power come from the activation of His Spirit within us.
So…instead of carrying around a cup of coffee all morning, why not meditate on God’s Word? Instead of taking a sip of coffee, why not commune with Christ? I can guarantee The Holy Spirit will be more energizing than the caffeine and God’s Word more refreshing than the coffee!
