Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 6:1-8:20 / Luke 11:33-54 / Psalm 42:1-6
A kindergarten teacher told everyone to draw a picture of what was important to them. Everyone finished except Johnny as he was still laboring over his drawing. The teacher put her arm around Johnny and sweetly asked, “What are you drawing?” Johnny didn’t look up but kept working feverishly on his picture and said, “God”. “But Johnny”, she said, “no one knows what God looks like.” Johnny factually responded, “They will when I’m through.”
Johnny’s childlike faith is a stark contrast to the atheistic Russian cosmonauts who claimed there was no God. Years ago they made their first trip around the earth and proudly announced, “We have been in the air. We have been all around the earth and we did not see God!” The following Sunday, W.A. Criswell made a classic statement, “Ah, if those cosmonauts had stepped out of their spacesuits, they would have seen God!” It definitely would not have been a welcomed sight but a dreadful and judgmental encounter.
We may not be able to sketch a picture of God but we certainly know who He is, what He is and what He has done. As Israel was about to enter the Promised Land, Moses reminded them, “Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Deuteronomy 6:4) They were to never forget their God who delivered them from Egypt, protected them through the wilderness and was about to give them a Promised Land…He was their One True God!
Scientists and philosophers believe all life is made up of atoms and have ruled out the existence of God. Our God isn’t limited to the physical because materialism and matter does not define Him. Jesus said that God is a Spirit and those that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24) God isn’t defined by the physical or by creation because He created and spoke all things into existence!
He is the only true God in the midst of the “many” gods that man worships. It is said there are over 500 million people in India yet there are more gods in the country than there are people. Man worships and sacrifices to gods who do not speak or respond. Our God lives and there is no limit to His power (Omnipotent), no limit to His presence (Omnipresence) and no limit to his knowing (Omniscience).
The Bible does not attempt to prove the existence of God. The opening verse of Genesis powerfully recognizes that God IS…”In the beginning GOD…” Hebrews 11:6 says, “Anyone who comes to God must believe that He exists.” The existence of God is fundamental to our reasoning and faith. To abandon the truth of the “One True God” is to live foolishly without meaning or purpose. God has continually manifested His presence to man and sent His Son Jesus to affirm His existence and complete His promise of redemption. I am thankful God makes His presence, power and love known to us… so that even a kindergartner can understand!
