Scripture Reading: Ezekiel 10:1-12:28 / Hebrews 7:11-28 / Psalm 119:169-176
Merchants use guarantees to make their products more appealing and saleable. Manufacturers make guarantees to validate their products quality and dependability. Sports figures guarantee victories and restaurants guarantee that their food tastes good! While scam artists mislead others with false guarantees. At times we place little value in guarantees, as they are not always sure, reliable or true.
Good news…there is a guarantee that is guaranteed! In Hebrews we read, “One who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind; You are a priest forever. Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.” (Hebrews 7:16,21,22)
A guarantee is a formal promise or assurance that certain conditions such as quality and durability will be fulfilled. If not, the product will be repaired or replaced. In this passage, “guarantee” is used in reference to legal and promissory documents as “a guarantor” or “one who stands security.” A guarantee is given as a security or surety. Judah promised surety for Benjamin and Paul promised Philemon he would be surety for Onesimus.
Jesus went even further by not only guaranteeing the New Covenant, He mediated and provided the New Covenant. Jesus Himself is our Guarantor and our security of a better covenant. Jesus guarantees all of the promises of the New Covenant. The new covenant will not be canceled and will never be annulled. Jesus established the New Covenant as He paid our debt that we were obligated to pay. He guarantees to pay all the debts that our sins have or will ever accumulate.
The covenant that Jesus established is better because the old covenant was temporary and the new covenant is eternal. God did not make a new covenant because the old covenant was bad but He did so because it was imperfect and incomplete. The New Covenant is perfect, complete, eternal and better! There is no need for a money-back guarantee because He is ever satisfying!
Many products will offer a lifetime replacement guarantee but that is only valid if the company is still in business. When the company disappears, the lifetime guarantee also disappears. Christ has a product of redemption that is guaranteed not only for a lifetime, but also for eternity. Christ’s own blood sacrifice and the Holy Spirit validates His Covenant with power throughout our lives. That guarantee doesn’t conclude with death but continues throughout all eternity. He is the only one who can make a lifetime and eternal guarantee…a guarantee that is out of this world!
