Scripture Reading: Exodus 15:1-16:36 / Matthew 28:1-20 / Psalm 21:8-13
In the 15th century, the Spaniards thought the earth was flat and that they had reached the outer limits of the earth. Their motto, “No More Beyond”. Christopher Columbus then came along, defied their wisdom and went beyond the map. Risking “falling off the earth”, he discovered a new world and land that changed the known world. 300 years later, American colonists bravely defied England and fought for freedom. The signing of the Declaration of Independence changed the world.
Other monumental days, discoveries and events have fostered transformation and history. Yet an angel proclaimed 3 words nearly 1980 years ago that have impacted the universe like none other before or since - “He is Risen”! “The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here, he has risen, just as he said…. go quickly and tell his disciples: “He has risen from the dead…” (Matthew 28:5-7)
Christ’s resurrection was an announcement not only heard around the world, it changed the entire world. The course of nature was defied as Jesus defeated the sting of death and the strength of the grave. There were others who rose from the dead like Lazarus and the widow’s son but His resurrection was different. Others rose only to die again but Jesus rose from the grave never to die again, unto eternal life!
Jesus had a glorified body that was not controlled by gravity, space or time. He appeared and disappeared despite locked doors and earthly restraints. Man cannot escape, avoid or defeat death. It has a “death grip” on us and no man has ever been able to overcome death until Jesus. Death was the final force of nature that submitted to Christ. The sea, wind, storms and even trees bowed to His Word and will. One day even the moon and sun will give way to His glory and bow in honor, as The Lamb of God becomes our eternal light.
Man could not stop the resurrection. A sealed and guarded tomb could not keep Jesus in the grave. The earth shook violently, an angel rolled the stone away and Jesus triumphantly walked out in victory and power. Christ conquered sin and changed the condition of man by providing hope, redemption and eternal life. Jesus descended to the lower parts of the earth to deliver the saints to the heavenly throne room of God. Jesus presented them spotless before The Father with the covering of His redemptive blood, not with the blood of bulls and calves.
Sin no longer has a hold on our lives because Jesus paid the penalty for our sins on the cross and defeated its power with His resurrection. Jesus has not only gained authority over nature and the sin of mankind; He has eternity in His domain. Jesus loosed the seals of creation, salvation and eternity. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! One day every tongue will confess He is Lord and every knee will bow in reverence to His dominion because…He Is Risen!
