Scripture Reading: Genesis 2:18-4:16 / Matthew 2:1-18 / Psalm 2:1-12
A popular game that children play is “Hide and Seek”. The seeker “It” would count, usually to 100, while everyone else would hide. “It” would then look for everyone after they completed the counting. When those hiding were spotted, the seeker would either call them out, tag them or race back to the base before the hider could. If someone snuck back to base without being seen or caught they were “free”. If the seeker gave up on finding people, they would call out, “All ye all ye in come free” or as we would say, “Ollie Ollie ocean free”.
Many do not realize that “Hide and Seek” is the oldest game man has ever played. The first game played was by Adam and Eve as they hid from God. “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. “But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
Adam and Eve were hiding because they ate the forbidden fruit…the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Immediately they felt different and their eyes were opened to their nakedness. They rebelled against God and lost their innocence and purity. The tree that was to be enlightening had become condemning as sin always brings terrible guilt and condemnation. It is our human nature to hide our sins.
Man was forever changed by sin as their moral, mental and spiritual natures became depraved. Instead of loving holiness, human nature is bent toward evil and sin. Man has a sense of right and wrong but choose to follow a pathway marked by disobedience. We hide from God because we are guilty of sin and feel shame in the presence of a holy God.
We cannot cover up our sin and there are consequences when we sin. Sin will not go unpunished, as there is a penalty and consequence for sin. A seven fold sentence was given to man because of their disobedience and sin… shame, fear, discord, physical and spiritual death, suffering, weariness of labor and separation. Sin is the only thing God abhors. Sin damns our souls, shuts up heaven and lays a foundation for eternal judgment.
Adam made excuses and blamed Eve for his sin and Eve blamed the serpent. Even when faced with truth, man will not take responsibility for their sin. God knows what we have done, and where we hide…there is no hiding from Him. We tend to hide from God in places that make us feel safe and comfortable. It is time to come out of the shadows of embarrassment, shame, excuses or defiance. God takes notice of our distance and separation. He always searches for us, pursues us and calls for us. It’s time to come out of hiding, confess and repent of our sin… God is calling!
