Scripture Reading: Genesis 24:1-67 / Matthew 9:14-38 / Psalm 8:1-9
Years ago, there was a famous explorer named William Beebe who was a good friend of President Theodore Roosevelt. When he visited the President, they would often go outdoors at night to see who could first locate the Andromeda galaxy. When they would find the tiny smudge in the starlight sky, one of them would recite, “This is the spiral galaxy of Andromeda. It is as large as our Milky Way. It is one of a hundred million galaxies. It is 750,000 light years away. It consists of 100 billion suns, each larger than our sun!” Then Roosevelt would grin and say; “Now I think we are small enough! Let’s go to bed.”
President Roosevelt was amazed at God’s infinite glory and creative power. The heavens reminded him of God’s greatness and his smallness. David was also awed by the majesty of God and declared, “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.” (Psalm 8:1)
David uses 2 different words for “Lord” here in this verse. The first Lord is “Jehovah”, the covenant keeping God…His personal covenant name. God connected with man in a relational way by committing Himself to man as a God who keeps His promises. God identified Himself to Moses as the “I am that I am.” The absolute existing one who has always been and will always be. He is not a created being but the creator of all things!
The second “Lord” is “Adonai” – The Sovereign…the One who has not only the ability but also the authority to keep His promises. God can do what He wills to do and there is no power that can stand against Him. He has the authority and dominion to intervene in man’s lives and the universe He has created!
His name is majestic in the earth…God’s name is noble, mighty, glorious and more excellent than any name on the earth that He formed and fashioned. That majestic power is exemplified in Christ and one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess His authoritative and sovereign Lordship.
The earth and even the heavens cannot contain the full revelation of God’s glory. David says that God’s glory is above the heavens… far beyond our universe that would take 20 billion light years to cross. Knowing that an Almighty God of this magnitude created man for fellowship, pursued man after their fall and provided restoration for sinful man…how can we not be awed? How majestic is Your Name!
