May 15… Free!
Scripture Reading: Judges 20:1-21:25 / John 8:31-59 / Psalm 61:1-8
What do you think of when you hear the word “Free”? Shoppers line up for it; advertisers use it; prisoners long for it and I usually like it unless it is attached to “trouble”. Jesus speaks about “free” yet the believing Jews who were following Him did not understand his concept of “free”.
Jesus told the believing Jews that the truth would set them free. He was referring to The Truth of His divinity and redemptive power that would set them free from sin. They related freedom to slavery, telling Jesus they were not slaves, but descendants of Abraham.
When I think of freedom from sin, I think of a prisoner who finally experiences life outside a bared window, secured doors and barbed wired walls. Sin holds us in its grasp and we can’t break out of its control.
The Jews related freedom to a slave, not a prisoner. Slaves are not bound by exterior locks, guns or walls but are bound by an inward mindset of defeat and surrender. A master may physically keep his slave in check but his greatest tactic is to bind him with fear, helplessness and hopelessness. A slave never dreams of freedom because they never believe they will be free. Slavery becomes a natural and accepted lifestyle.
Can it be said that we live like slaves to sin, deceived into surrendering to its power? Since Christ has set us free, what hold does it have on us? Sin does not imprison us by its power but holds us captive by deceit. By faith we are saved and by faith we are set free. This is not about the power of the “mind” but the power of Christ’s cross…that’s the truth! Let the truth set you free!
