Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 29:24-31:14 / 2 Thessalonians 2:1-17 / Psalm 119:33-40
Over the past 50 years, man made preservatives have been added to food and cosmetics to give them a longer shelf life. Additives are used to kill and prevent molds and yeast from growing on food. For centuries, natural preservatives such as salt, honey and freezing have been used but today man made preservatives are more common and there are more than 300 additives used today.
These man made, chemical additives may serve their purpose of preserving food yet studies show they can also be unsafe. Artificial preservatives will always be a source of contention yet man is still dependent upon some form of preservatives. In fact, we could not survive without God’s natural preservatives in our bodies!
God has made us with natural antibodies that preserve us from the effects of disease and sickness. We are fearfully and wonderfully made with an amazing ability to do extraordinary things. God has also given us preservatives to live in this sin entrenched and fallen world.
David recognized the preservative work of God’s Word in his life. Psalm 119 is an acrostic styled song divided into 22 sections for each of the 22 Hebrew alphabetical letters. The Word of God is the theme throughout this Psalm. Here in the 5th section, David writes, “How I long for your precepts! Preserve my life in your righteousness.” (Psalm 119:40)
David found The Word of God had the ability to prevent “spoilage” in his life and it also gave him “nutritional value and flavor”. God’s Word would keep David as David kept it. It would lead him in paths of righteousness, bringing lasting joy and delight. The spoilage of selfish gain would be thwarted as God’s Word was active in his heart. His eyes would be enlightened to the deception of sin’s temptation.
We cannot be misled or drawn away by man made, artificial or worldly preservatives. Satan deceived man in the garden and his tactics have not changed. We can chase the solutions and preservatives of this world but they are ineffective against the wiles of the devil. God’s Word is the only preservative against the destructiveness of sin. Make God’s Word be your rule of faith and conduct…it will preserve your life!
