Scripture Reading: 1 Chronicles 19:1-22:1 / 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5 / Psalm 91:1-8
There’s a story about a man and his traveling sideshow that would go from town to town displaying his strength. The man would take an orange and squeeze every bit of juice out of it and then challenge anyone to squeeze one more drop out of the shriveled orange.
One day a man who was thin and unimposing stepped forward, took off his suit coat and began to squeeze the orange. He started to work the orange little by little, turning and squeezing. To everyone’s surprise, including the traveler, the man managed to get 2 more drops out of the orange. When asked his secret, he replied, “I’m the church treasurer and I am used to squeezing every dollar and make them stretch!
Sometimes those who we consider weak are the strongest and have the greatest impact on our lives… a grandparent, a Sunday School Teacher, a cancer victim. They are simply God’s reminders that there is a higher power governing our world. God chooses “the foolish things of the world to shame the wise…and the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” (1 Corinthians 1:22)
Men seek the extraordinary and are enamored by success. The world was not impressed by Christ’s natural ability, strength or lifestyle. They rejected His message and despised His name. When Jesus died on the cross, it proved to them He was weak and powerless. Little did they know…the cross wasn’t the end, it was the beginning. He would rise from the grave three days later, never to die again.
He laid down His life in order to bring redemption to all mankind. As Paul writes, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (vs.18) God defies and destroys the world’s definition of wisdom and strength. A simple childlike prayer of faith sets men free from the bondage, hold and penalty of sin!
Foolishly believing in a weak cross changes the course and eternity of our lives. Jesus does not take a back seat to the world’s/Satan’s power and wisdom. He defeated the devil and thwarted his plan when He rose victorious over death, hell and the grave. Some may question why God doesn’t display His strength, power and authority today. God does not need to speak or prove Himself again…He has already spoken at Mt Calvary, the Garden Tomb and Mt. Olives! But don’t worry…He is still on the Throne and one day He will return victoriously, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord!
