June 5 – The Gift
Scripture Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-8:18 / Acts 2:22-47 / Proverbs 14:5-14
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the upper room caused quite a stir in Jerusalem. People were drawn to the location as they heard exuberant Godly praises in a number of different languages coming from the building. Peter addressed the crowd that gathered and explained the significance of the event as being the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy.
He goes on to share that the Jesus they crucified was The Messiah of whom David spoke about. Jesus died and rose from the dead, fulfilling David’s Messianic prophecy. It says, “When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” (v.37) Peter instructed them to repent, be baptized in the name/authority of Jesus and their sins would be forgiven.
But Peter continued and said…”And you will receive the Gift of The Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off…” (v.37,38) Interestingly, Peter responded to their inquiry with the answers of salvation and The Gift of The Holy Spirit. They did not reject salvation or The Holy Spirit and 3,000 were added to the church!
The message of salvation and The Gift of The Holy Spirit was the message the early church preached and lived. That message still needs to be preached and experienced today! What shall you do? Receive The Gift of The Holy Spirit…it is for you!
