Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 8:16-9:37 / Acts 23:12-35 / Psalm 80:1-7
God keeps promises…and judgments. He pronounced judgment upon Ahab and his evil descendants. God anointed Jehu as king over Israel and instructed him to fulfill God’s word by destroying the house of Ahab. “You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master and I will avenge the blood of all the Lord’s servants shed by Jezebel… as for Jezebel, dogs will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.” (2 Kings 9:7,10)
Jehu promptly went and killed king Joram, throwing his body on the plot of ground once owned by Naboth. He then followed Ahaziah, king of Judah and took his life as well. Finally, Jehu rode into Jezreel where he encountered Jezebel. What happened?
Jezebel shows us what not to do… she painted her eyes and fixed her hair. (vs.30) She decked herself in vanity and pride instead of displaying a heart and spirit of humility.
Jezebel shows us what not to say… “Have you come in peace, Zimri, you murderer of your master? She antagonizes Jehu and calls him a murderer like Zimri. Jezebel was not in a position to degrade or challenge Jehu but she was true to her evil ways.
Jezebel shows us where not to go… down. Jehu called for her to be thrown down from the wall and his request was promptly fulfilled. Jezebel died a violent death; she lay dead on the road and was trampled by horses, splattering her blood on the wall. It didn’t take long before dogs came and devoured her body, leaving only her skull, hands and feet. (vs.35)
Jezebel had a life like none other and she had a death like none other too. She wasn’t in control but God was in control. Jezebel showed us what not to do, go and say – God showed us His Word is sure and powerful… He always has the last word!
