June 16 - The making of a man…
Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 1:1-2:12 / Acts 10:23-11:18 / Psalm 74:10-17
As David nears the end of his life, he offers some fatherly counsel to his son Solomon. His desire is for Solomon to become a man of God. His counsel? “So be strong, show yourself a man and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in his ways and keep his decrees and commands, his laws, and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.” (1 Kings 2:2,3)
David understands Solomon’s success is ultimately dependent upon his relationship and faithfulness to God. His counsel is for Solomon to be strong and show himself as a man. We believe true manhood is measured by strength and the world associates that strength with that which is self made, controlled and contained. Physical, political, and social strength are regarded with admiration and pride.
David says true strength is developed by a life of submission and obedience to God. A man is made not by walking in their own ways, will and wisdom but by walking according to the decrees, laws, commands and requirements of God. David says God-dependency makes a man, not self-sufficiency.
Less of self and more of Him makes a man head and shoulders above the world. Their stature may be less but their standing in heaven can’t be bigger. Their status may be insignificant but their influence will be eternal. God blesses the man who follows Him fully. Wherever he goes and whatever he does will be touched by the prosperous Spirit of God. God made man (Adam) in the garden…He is well-equipped and able to make men today!
Pastor James Clark has pastored Calvary Assembly since 1985. He is blessed with his wife Yvonne, six children, two son-in-laws, a beautiful granddaughter and hopefully many more grandchildren to follow!
