Scripture Reading: Zechariah 9:1-11:17 / Revelation 1:1-20 / Psalm 140:1-5
The early church experienced great persecution from the Romans as many were imprisoned; some were martyred while John the apostle was exiled to the Greek island of Patmos. This was not an island of paradise but an island of death as prisoners were banished there to never return. It was here on this island, we find Jesus revealing Himself to John and He also prophetically unfolds the future.
Before Christ revealed the future, He revealed Himself…The Revelation of Jesus Christ! At times we overlook Him and focus on His prophecy. John was so impacted by the glory, holiness and magnificence of Jesus that he, “fell at his feet as though dead. (Revelation 1:17) Jesus Christ is the totality of our existence and eternity.
Jesus declared, “I am the Alpha and the Omega” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” (1:8) Jesus is the source of truth and knowledge as He is the Alpha and the Omega. Alpha was the first letter of the ancient 27 lettered Greek alphabet and Omega was the last letter. Jesus was saying that he was the “A to Z”…the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
The alphabet is used to communicate truth and knowledge. By arranging the letters in various orders, tens of thousands of words are made. Consider the power and extensiveness of words as they have filled the pages of millions of books. Words allow man to orally communicate with one another in clarity and understanding. Jesus says that He is all of the letters in the alphabet, not part of them but all of them. All knowledge is found in Him and nothing escapes His wisdom and insight.
We can never forget that He is the author and finisher of our faith. Faith begins with Him and will end with Him. He is faithful to author and speak faith into our lives as well as develop and complete our faith. As Paul says, “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it…” (Philippians 1:6)
Our confidence also rests in Him who is and who was and who is to come. He has always been and always will be. He is omnipresent! Jesus identifies Himself as “The Almighty”…the one who has his hand on everything. This is another reminder of His sovereignty and presence as well as His power. He is all-powerful!
This gives us great hope and confidence knowing that He is the bookend of our lives. He is over the very beginning and ending of our lives. Today is His, tomorrow is His and the future is His. He is the initiator of every detail in our life and all that concerns us from being born to dying is in His control. He is the master over the beginning and the ending of our work and lives. Why should we fear…we have the revelation of an ever present, all knowing and completely powerful Savior!
