Scripture Reading: Joel 2:18-3:21 / Hebrews 4:1-13 / Psalm 119:145-152
Of all books ever published, The Bible is the leading book of all time! There is a reason for its popularity and longevity. Man has found God’s Word to be a breathing, intervening and transformational power in their lives. The Bible has been translated into many languages and versions, which have not lessened its effectiveness but has broadened its reach.
The Word of God is described as, “Living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and lay bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12,13)
People from different nations and cultures have discovered God’s Word to be like an effective sword that penetrates the very core of our hearts and lives. A double-edged sword is designed to be thrust cleanly and easily into the body. It can be wielded from the left or the right as both sides of the blade was sharpened. Romans considered it to be the most effective weapon and their weapon of choice.
God’s Word has the powerful ability to penetrate the soul and spirit of man. It reaches within the emotional and reasoning soul, cutting with conviction and truth. Carnal and humanistic arguments are defenseless against God’s Word. The spirit of man is invaded by the strength and presence of an Almighty God as His Word penetrates their spiritual consciousness. God’s revelation cannot be dismissed as it brings man to a point of decision…to either accept or reject.
Just as a bone is filled with marrow and joints attach bones to each other, The Word penetrates the recesses of our thoughts and impacts our heart, the life-connecting organ of our body. Nothing in man is hidden from its penetrating, revealing, convicting and restorative power. Everything is uncovered, revealed and exposed. His Word demands a response from us as God holds us responsible and accountable. The purpose of God’s Word is not to destroy life, but change our lives, equip our lives and give us life!
As Puritan writer Thomas Brooks said, “The Word of the Lord is a light to guide you, a counselor to counsel you, a comforter to comfort you, a staff to support you, a sword to defend you, and a physician to cure you. The Word is a mine to enrich you, a robe to clothe you, and a crown to crown you.” The Word of God…there is nothing like it!
