Scripture Reading: Ezekiel 28:1-29:21 / Hebrews 12:14-29 / Psalm 126:1-6
Last Friday, November 9, 2013, one of the most intense and powerful storms in world history struck the Philippines. A Typhoon with sustained winds of 195 mph, with gusts up to 235 mph leveled several small and fragile islands in the Philippine chain. The winds leveled tens of thousands of homes as the storm surges swept more than a mile inland and reached to a wave height of 23 feet.
The official death toll presently stands at 2,357 but there are believed to be thousands more lives lost. More than 580,000 people have been displaced and over 11 million people have been affected by the catastrophe. There is a lack of water and food that has resulted in looting, violence and terror.
Man wants to be in control of their lives but we have again been reminded by last week’s Typhoon that man is not in control. We face out of control circumstances that devastate us financially, physically and relationally. Our self- made kingdoms are not unshakable and often on the verge of collapsing. Like the 3 little pigs, our houses made of straw and wood cannot stand up to the huffing and puffing of the big bad wolf. Even the strength and security of our “brick” houses will eventually fall.
We can prepare to some degree for financial and physical assaults but there is very little we can do to protect ourselves from natural disasters. Furthermore, there is absolutely nothing we can do to avoid God’s divine authority. As God shook Mt. Sinai and shook all the forces of evil on Mt. Calvary, He will once and for all shake not only all of earth, but all of heaven as well. “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” (Hebrews 12:26)
Where is man’s hope and security? Satisfaction and salvation will not be found in the Kingdoms of this world but in the Kingdom of God. “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.” (vs.28,29)
God’s Kingdom will not be shaken, it will not be manipulated or controlled, it will not fall or be defeated…His Kingdom is eternal! God manifested His power on Mt. Sinai with thunder, lightening and fire. His consuming fire also fell upon those who rebelled against Him. Kings, nations and principalities have challenged God’s authoritative power to no avail. Even the cross could not shake His Kingdom as He rose victoriously over death, hell and the grave!
We do not face God in the blackness and terror of Sinai but find Him as a redemptive God of grace at Mt. Calvary. We bow our wills to His Lordship, our knees to Him in worship and our hearts in awe and reverence. Our God is a consuming fire who judges sin and refines our lives in purity. We can trust His Word, His Way and His Will…His Kingdom is not and will not be shaken!
